William R. Conte collection of papers, 1959-1971.

The William R. Conte Collection consists of the personal papers of Dr. Conte that are housed at the Washington State Library (WSL). The papers include journal articles, notes, memos, and letters dealing with issues in the correctional and mental health fields. Additional materials include published copies of papers, audio tapes and CD ROMs. The collection was donated to WSL on Sept. 17, 1975. Their placement in the Library was to make them available for those researching the development of services for the mentally ill, developmentally disabled, juvenile and adult offenders who came under the care of the Washington State Dept. of Institutions during Dr. Conte's tenure from 1959-1971. In Dec. 1998 Dr. Conte's wife, Suzanne, entered into a cooperative agreement with WSL to convert the body of the collection into electronic formats for preservation and access. Mrs. Conte paid the costs relating to microfilm and digital conversion files up to $7,000. She and her family members received copies of the set at the end of the project. The generous gift also served as a procedural test-bed for WSL staff to conduct digitization of WSL collections using an outside vendor. The firm CDCOM converted approximately 25,000 pages of text to create the CDs for the collection. The project was completed and met the contractual deadlines of the contract.
